Small Jazz Band Arranging Project Guidelines

General

The student will construct and arrangement performance based on a pre-existing, instructor approved, jazz composition.

The project must be suitable for (sight-reading): playable the first time through WITHOUT VERBAL EXPLANATION.

Projects will be performed by students during class time on the due date shown in the class schedule.

Prior to the class performance, the student will provide:
1. a full concert score showing all musical activity (free of notational and musical errors)
2. notationally correct, printed, transposed parts for each instrument involved

Grading

The one horn project is worth a total of 160 points.
The two horn project is worth a total of 440 points.
The three horn project is worth a total of 792 points.
The four horn project is worth a total of 1540 points.

Project grading will depend on:
1. whether or not the student followed the parameters outlined by the instructor on the assignment sheet (below) and during class discussion.
2. whether or not the arrangement is readable and 100% playable the 1st time through without verbal explanation.
3. whether or not the parts are legible, correctly transposed, and free of notational errors.

Additional Information

If verbal explanation is required in order for the arrangement to be playable, if some portion of the parts are visually unreadable (or mis-transposed), or if the score contains musical or notational errors the project MAY be set aside, not performed, and considered incomplete.

There MAY be no make-ups for incomplete project work. In this case, a grade MAY be assigned, without performance, based on the elements completed.

Absences on the day of project performance are considered unexcused.

Projects not turned in due to absence will be treated as incomplete and graded accordingly.

Consult the class schedule regarding due dates for the various parts of this project.
